old skool

When I first began blogging my creative process, I so wanted to be one of those artist that drew the cool, edgy stuff. The kind that was quirky and a little dark that made you want to open up the artist's head to see where the heck it came from. I envied all the bloggers who seemed to be able to do easily what I couldn't. I was stuck with my bunnies and hedgies and elephants baking cupcakes. It took a long time to accept what came out in the sketchbook. But that's me and it's what I do and now that that battle is over I can get on with it and have some fun!

At least I've managed to shake some of the round-cuteness from my style. Talk about cutey-cute-cute, check out those Halloween images I did for Kmart years ago. Here's an old sample of the trick-or-treating bags they made with them below.

  1. ha! that's funny to hear from someone else. i always think i want to make huge, vibrant, pop-arty paintings, but what comes out are tiny, victorian lady watercolors. it makes me feel silly but i guess...we are what we are. and i really like your art, so it works on this side!

  2. I know what you mean about another style of art. I have the same issues and always come back to the same style. I think it's here to stay. I am glad yours is sticking around because it is so dang cute! Love it. AND I love the Kmart bag too.

I left you something at my blog... come and get it whenever you can.

  4. Wow, I'd never heard this from another artist. You've just made my day. I felt exactly the same way - for so long I longed to make images that were dark and moody and layered with symbolism - all the things Iove in illustrations. But my images are cute and playful and simple. It took me so long to embrace my style, and things have only started to take off now that I have. Thanks for normalising this for me!
